How it All Began…
I always knew I was different. I didn’t know what that meant for a long time, but I just didn’t think or act like my friends. For one I enjoyed playing with toy cars and other toys I was told were for boys. But it wasn’t just my interests or the fact I despised the color pink, I also thought things through differently.
I remember in the 6th grade we went on a field trip to a salmon hatchery. We were given multiple tasks while there and one of them was to rake up all the plant matter and other waste that had accumulated at the bottom of a large empty tank. I immediately thought the best way to do this was an assembly line and attempted to encourage my classmates to do so. However, I only got the interest of one kid–let’s call him Dominic. He caught on straight away and could see how much more efficient and effective an assembly line would be. We saw our teacher standing near and realized she could clearly see what was going on. I was hoping she would tell everyone to give our idea a go, but instead she just smiled and told us we were doing great. So we gave up trying to get others to join us and just did our strategy ourselves.
Dyslexia shows up in different ways and for me this is how my dyslexic brain works–it’s always on patrol for a solution. I can’t shut it off and I can’t get it to slow down. I often feel like I’m a mouse in a maze and when I hit one dead end I just redirect and carry on, until I finally reach the cheese.
Initially I Fought My Dyslexia…
I use to be so mad at my dyslexia–so mad it controlled my life, so frustrated I wasn’t normal, so annoyed I couldn’t even order an ice cream without stammering.
It took me awhile to figure this out, but my dyslexia isn’t a curse or a burden. And as soon as I realized that and stopped fighting, hating, and being angry at it then things got a whole lot more awesome.
Then I Discovered the Superpower it Truly Was…
It’s because of dyslexia that I have such determination and willpower to succeed. It taught be never to give up, because if you really do try your hardest you either succeed or are given a lesson that will help you succeed next time round. My brain doesn’t see giving up as an option so when the going gets tricky, my brain is in full power mode coming up with solutions. This is why dyslexia is my superpower.
I started out on my journey focusing on pain relief and helping people through bodywork get their lives back from the pain was the running the show. However, I realized that my mission was much larger than that and that it also included helping people discover their superpower and tap into it so that they could live the life they were born to live. I believe that we are given certain gifts, mine is dyslexia so that we see the world differently and therefore have something extra special to give the community. I’m all about helping you to find and unlock yours.
